The Paul family headstone at St.Oswald's

William Robert Paul was born in Stratford, Essex but before the age of 6 he had moved with his family to Sowerby where his father farmed 23 acres. Remaining in Sowerby, William became a grocer and a sub postmaster running a post office in Front Street.

His second son Herbert, a railway clerk, married Jane Wilson at Hexham, Northumberland in 1907. The couple went to live at Cleveland Terrace, Northallerton where they had a son William Herbert born around 1908. Herbert joined the West Yorkshire Regiment and went to France on 10th September 1915. Although Herbert returned home at the end of the War, it appears his health was affected by his experiences causing his early death in 1921. Herbert died at 50 Ambrose Street, York and the informant was W.P.Paul his elder brother. Cause of death was stated as 1) Degeneration of the myocardium, 2) Chronic rheumatism and 3) Cerebral Thrombosis.
