July 1891 - 5th October 1917 (age 26)
Private 242705
10th Bn. Yorkshire Regiment
Harry Greenwood was born in Sowerby, the son of agricultural labourer
John Greenwood and his wife Annie. Harry attended Sowerby School from
13th April 1896 and after leaving school he worked as a cowman on a farm.
During the first few months of 1916, Harry married Hilda Mary Wright also
of Sowerby, she was the daughter of Walter Thomas Wright. At the time
of the marriage, Harry's parents were already deceased. Harry and Hilda
were blessed with a daughter Ellen Elizabeth born at Pickering on 15th December 1916.
Harry enlisted into the Yorkshire Regiment at Thirsk. He died of wounds
on 5th October 1917 and lies at Godewaersvelde British Cemetery plot 1.L.46.
It appears that he was another casualty of Third Ypres (Passchendaele)
and was taken to a casualty clearing station behind the lines, where the
medical staff were unable to save him.
Hilda's address was recorded as 8 Castle Yard, Pickering. Harry is also listed on the war memorial at Pickering.
