7th July 1891 - 23rd December 1917 (age 26)
"C" Bty. 173rd Bde. Royal Field Artillery
John Smith Dale married Nancy Mary Lister at Thirsk in 1889, but sadly he died only seven years later leaving Nancy widowed with two sons and a daughter, all under the age of five. Nancy was to lose both of her sons in the Great War. The children were all born at Topcliffe, but by the time of the 1901 census, the family had moved to Sowerby where Nancy's eldest son was recorded as Harvey L. Dale. His name had been recorded as Harvey Lister Dale when he started at Sowerby Junior School on 18th November 1898.
Harry Lister Dale died of wounds on 23rd December 1917, and he was buried at Le Treport, which was the location of a hospital on the coast behind the lines. The records show he was the son of Nancy Mary and the late John Smith Dale of 25 Grove Hall Drive, Dewsbury Road, Leeds and native of Sowerby.
Harry Lister Dale's grave at Le Treport - "At Rest"
Harry's older brother (John Charles Dale) died four months earlier and is also recorded on the war memorials in Sowerby. Nancy Dale died at Sowerby on 31st December 1925.
